Why are PNG files so large?

PNG stores every pixel losslessly, including photos where this is wasteful. Screenshots, logos and graphics with flat colors compress well; photos are usually better saved as JPG or WebP.

Is PNG compression lossless?

Reducing colors is technically lossy. If you need pixel-perfect output, convert to WebP or JPG instead - the visual result is usually better at the same file size.
