What Is WebP? The Web Image Format Explained

WebP is an image format Google introduced in 2010, based on the VP8 video codec. It was designed for one job: making web images smaller.

Key features

  • Lossy and lossless modes in one format.
  • Alpha transparency in both modes.
  • Animation support, as a lighter alternative to GIF.
  • 25-35% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality.

Support today

Every current browser - Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari - decodes WebP natively. Adoption stalled for years because of Safari, but since Safari 14 (2020) the compatibility argument is mostly gone. The remaining holdouts are older desktop applications and some upload services.

Should you use it?

For web publishing: yes, without hesitation. For files you send to unknown recipients or old software: JPG remains the safest universal choice. Tools like a converter let you keep both versions of the same image.
