YouTube Thumbnail Size Guide: Specs That Get Clicks
The thumbnail is the single biggest lever on your video's click-through rate - and it has hard technical requirements.
The official specs
- Resolution: 1280×720 px minimum (16:9)
- File size: under 2MB
- Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF (static), WebP
Why 1280×720 and not smaller
Thumbnails appear tiny in search results but full-screen on TVs and in embeds. Uploading at 1280×720 keeps text readable everywhere. Anything smaller looks soft when YouTube scales it up.
Design rules that survive compression
- Use 3-5 words of large, high-contrast text - thumbnails render at ~210px wide in search.
- One clear focal point; busy thumbnails blur into noise.
- Check the result at small size before publishing.
Under 2MB is easy
A 1280×720 JPG at quality 80 is typically 100-250KB. If yours is bigger, compress it - YouTube will not reward extra bytes, and oversized files sometimes fail to upload.
